For a very long time a Mrs. McArthy was a mysterious figure that Edith nee Hill used to refer to as having known Robert McAloney. Mrs. McArthy is also the one who told Edith about Robert having "another family". I could never place this mysterious woman. Well, today, January 5, 2021 a random post on the Vintage St. Catharines Facebook page by Ron Unruh as put Mrs. McArthy into context. Here is the message he posted: "Clark Street. 8 small homes built in 1906. My friend Eddie McArthy lived in the first home, closest to the viewer. I lived at #10 across the street, 1949-‘54. The McArthys were the first family on our block to own a b/w television. Mrs. McArthy let neighbourhood kids watch Hopalong Cassidy & Sagebrush Trail before we went home for supper. In 1978 the homes were taken down and Hillcrest Terrace replaced them." Mrs. McArthy lived around the corner from Robert and the family, who were then living on Academy Street and later moved to the next block on the other side of Clark Street, Raymond Street. The common area that they would have likely shared was First United Church on the corner of Clark and Church Street and opposite Academy Street.

Robert apparently deserted his family in Montreal by joining the army as follows. I have included the transcript of his discharge from the army having been charged by Mary nee Logan with desertion in October 1918. Note particularly, that he joined the British army, not the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

My aunt used to be greatly distressed by a hairdressing customer that she had named Mrs. Carson! Mrs. Carson had worked her way into my aunt's beauty salon claiming to know Robert very well and claiming that he boarded with her when he first arrived in the Niagara Peninsula. My aunt many, many, many times replayed her conversations with Mrs. Carson to me when she would visit me when I lived on Elm Street. She was greatly distressed around this time 1980-1990 as Mary, my cousin, had concocted some very damaging stories about Robert that she told my aunt - I know why she did that, but my poor aunt couldn't put anything into perspective and so a lot of the past about Robert came flooding back to her and in particular her conversations with Mrs. Carson. Apparently, Mrs. Carson freely told my aunt about Robert's "other family and children that he had deserted" 'somewhere in Canada'. Mrs. Carson came into my aunt's life before she and Robert were married and she always put it down to Mrs. Carson's own jealously as Robert didn't want to marry her (Mrs. Carson). But, when Mary pulled the grand scheme during the 80s my aunt became so angry with Robert and so angry with herself for marrying him.

Interesting that this marriage was sanctified by way of an irregular marriage ceremony. Under the law of Scotland, the union of the couple was considered a legitimate marriage, yet the ceremony, itself, remained an unlawful act. Accordingly, the parties to an irregular marriage were liable to be prosecuted as soon as the Sheriff was able to serve them with a Warrant. It would appear from this marriage certificate that the Sheriff's Warrant was served almost immediately upon completion of the ceremony. To learn what penalties were imposed upon Robert and his bride further research would have to be carried out in the Sheriff's records in the archives at Edinburgh and the Sheriff's Court offices in Glasgow, Scotland.
