Served 10th Hussars as a musician at age 15 years, 11 months. Was sent to East Indies and to Sudan before being declared unfit for duty in 1893.
John Gregory enlisted in the 10th Hussars on the 21st May 1875 at Canterbury. His habits and conduct in service were described as regular, very good and temperate. He was 5 feet 3 inches tall with brown hair and fair muscular development. His pulse was recorded as 76 beats per minutes with 17 inspirations. There were no small pox marks and a vaccination mark when he was vaccinated as an infant. He was re-vaccinated on 31 May 1875 with a perfect result.

at East Indies from 11 Dec 1879 to 18 Feb 1884 being 4 years and 70 days
at Sudan from 19 Feb 1884 to 21 Apr 1884 being 63 days
back at home from 22 Apr 1884 to 23 Jun 1893 being 9 years and 63 days.
He received the Soudan Medal Clasp El Feb. Tamaai Khedives Star but was not wounded during that campaign in 1884. John was found to have valve disease of the heart, contracted in and caused by his service as a soldier (vide AFB248).
John had been educated at the School of Musketry, Hythe and received his certificate in December 1884. Gymnastics at Aldershot and received an Instructors Certificate. Certificates of Education being Second Class.
He had his fair share of medical problems during his service, Fever in June and July of 1880; Gonorhea and Diarrhea while at Lucknow during 1881 and then Dysentry in 1882. In 1889 he was diagnosed with dilation of the left side of the heart while serving at Cork, Ireland.
He was promoted 3 times, first to Corporal on 31 May 1882; to Sergeant on 22 April 1884 and lastly to SIF on 8 Dec 1885. | GREGORY, John Charles (I2446)
