    • Jail Register: James Clatworthy, age 25 years (bc 1811), carpenter, committed by W. Helyar, Esq. on Jun 28, offence charged with - Isaac Gifford, stealing and James Clatworthy receiving 2 pieces of leather and a calf's skin of John Perratt; tried at Bridgewater 27th Jun 1836 by the Right Honourable H. Hobhouse & William Miles, Esq., verdict guilty, sentence 6 months House of Correction, sent to Wilton Gaol (Isaac Gifford sent to Shepton Gaol for 1 year)


      There is a reference to a James Clatworthy in the jail register of 1842 as follows:
      #282 James Clatworthy, aged 31 years, 5' 6-1/2" tall, fair hair, light grey eyes, light brown hair, married, cut on right eye brow and left, born North Petherton, last residence West Monkton, shoemaker, received at jail 14 Feb 1842

      Jail Register: James Clatworthy, age 30 years (bc 1812), shoemaker, committed by R. M. King, Esq. received from Wilton prison, offence charged with - Stealing GB35 in various monies the property of Mary Stuckey. Breaking the dwelling house of Ephraim Lowton and stealing twenty sovereigns and other monies along with Elias Pym and James Pym; tried at Taunton Michaelmas Sessions Oct 17, 1842 by the Right Honourable H. Hobhouse & F. Luttrell, Esq., verdict guilty, sentence he and Elias Pym sentenced to 15 years transportation while James Pym sent for 10 years transportation. If before convicted of Felony or imprisoned for any offence: Mids 1836 6 months Wilton and 3 times charged with house breaking. The Pyms also had prior convictions for house breaking.

      KNOW all men by these presents that Mr. William Clatworthy of the parish of North Petherton in the county of Somerset, taylor [sic], and George Fear of the said parish are held and firmly bound to Charles by divine permission Lord Bishop of Bath and Wells in two hundred poudns of lawful money of Great Britain to be paid to the said Lord Bishop or his certain Attorney Executors Administrators or Assigns for the true payment whereof we bind oursevles and each of us by himself for the whole and every part thereof and the heirs, Executors and Administrators of us and each of us firmly by these presents sealed with our seals dated the second day of February in the thirty first year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King defend of the faith and in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety one

      THE CONDITION of this Obligation is such that if hereafter there shall not appear any lawful act or impediment by reason of any pre-contract entered into before the twenty-fifth day of March one thousand sedven hundred and fifty four, consanguinity, affinity or any other lawfrul means whatsoever but that WILLIAM CLATWORTHY of the said parish of North Petherton, widower and REBECCA DINMEAD of the said parish, spinster may lawfully solemnize Marriage together and in the same afterwards lawfully remain and continue for man and wife according to the laws in that behalf provided and moreover if there be not at this present time any action suit plaint quarrel or demand moved or depending before any Judge ecclesiastical or temporal for or con[?] any oath lawful impediment between the said parties nor that either of them be of any other parish or of better estate or [?] than to the Judge at granting of the licence is suggested and by William Clatworthy sworn to at the same time.

      And lastly if the same marriage shall be openly solemnized in the Church or Chapel in the licence specified between the hours appointed in the Constitutions ecclesiastical confirmed and according to the form of the Book of Common Prayer now by law established and if the above boundin William Clatworthy and George Fear do save harmless the said Bishop, his Chancellor, his Surrogates and others his officers whatsoever by reason of the premises then this obligation to be void or [?] to remain in full force and virtue

      William Clatworthy of this parish widower (taylor) and Rebecca Dinmead of the same, spinster were married in this Church by Licence, dated the 2nd day of Feby. 1791 this eighth day of February in the year one thousand seven hundred and ninety one by me J. Aldridge, Vicar.
