bat. & Mary Smale, sp., botp [she signed Mary Smale alias Hill]. Wit: William Hill/Stephen Smale
The witness, William Hill, helps to somewhat indicate that there was a close relationship between a William Hill and this fellow, Robert. Inasmuch as both William and Robert were married at Beaworthy or christened children at Beaworthy, there is an indication of a strong tie to the parish other than just employment.

    2. [S17] Parish Registers, England, Church of England, (England, Exeter: Devon Record Office), Beaworthy, Devon, England, 15 May 1810.
James Parsons, of Halwell and Elizabeth Hill of this parish [Beaworthy] married in this church by banns fifteenth day of May in the year One Thousand Eight Hundred and ten by me Thomas UpJohn [Curate]. This marriage was solemnized between us: James Parsons by his mark, Elizabeth Hill [signed]. In the presence of Richard Gerry/Elizabeth Smale.
Richard Gerry signed as witness to nearly every marriage throughout 1810 and into 1811 so therefore must have been a churchwarden or sexton.
