  • Notes
    • After researching numerous parish registers kept at various parishes in and around Linkinhorne, Cornwall, for those bearing the surname Hosking, or a close equivalent, it has become apparent that the surname of HOSKING was also spelled as HOCKING, HOSKIN, HOSKYN, HOCKYN, and HAWKING. In particular various members the one family by the surname of Hocking over in the register of Linkinhorne over two centuries with each male member using at least two and sometimes three of the variant surname spellings.

Additionally, the 1841 census indicates that Mary Ann was "Not born in County". It was not until the 1861 census that her birthplace was shown as "Linkinhorne, Cornwall". All other years of census simply show her birthplace as Lifton, Devon. I highly doubt that a wild card birthplace of Linkinhorne, Cornwall would have been written in 1861 as there were other places far more commonplace in Cornwall for Devon residents to have been born, such as Launceston or Calstock.

Consequently, I feel confident in identifying the parents of this Mary Ann had been born at Linkinhorne. Although I had initially identified her parents as Charles Hocking and Mary (nee Rundall), there was another Mary Ann Hosking [sic] baptised at Linkinhorne in 1807. The marriage to John Harris she is described as "Mary Ann Hosking" and a John Hosking has signed as a witness. However, on census she is often recorded simply as Mary. Unfortunately, it was not necessary to record the age of marrying parties at the time of this marriage in 1828. So, on one hand the marriage record suggests Hosking is the correct surname, which would support the baptism in 1807 to John Hosking. On the other hand the census and her age on the census support the baptism of Mary Hocking [sic] to Charles Hocking.

NOTE: Surname on christening is spelled Hawking.
