    • from Ancestry.com collection of New York marriages:

      Name: Lindo Penney
      Gender: Male
      Marriage Date: 11 Feb 1925
Marriage Place: Kings, New York, USA
      Certificate Number: 2640

Apparently the recorder at Kings County failed to record the names of all of the brides on that date as none of the other marriages list a bride's name, either.

    • !Frances died at about 9:00 a.m. Monday morning. John called us about 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. I had tried to reach him earlier Tuesday morning but both cell phone mail boxes were full. I had terrible sadness all day Monday and wonder if it wasn't a message that she had passed.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Frances Sorkvist, 87, of Sunnyside, a loving mother and grandmother who was well-known for her kindness and baking prowess, died Monday in Addeo Hospice Residence, Egbertville.

Born Frances Penny in Brooklyn, she was taken to Canada as a child. She returned to Brooklyn in 1946 and moved to Tompkinsville in 1950. She had lived in Sunnyside since 1958.

Mrs. Sorkvist was primarily a homemaker, but worked in secretarial positions for the American News Company and the insurance company Johnson and Higgins, both Manhattan, in earlier years.

She and her husband of 58 years, George, were married in St. Paul’s-St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Port Richmond, in 1950. She remained an active church member until very recently. Her husband died in 2008.

Mrs. Sorkvist was a member of her church’s altar guild and its sunshine club, and she was a member of the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America.

Known as the “cookie lady,’’ to neighborhood children because she always shared cookies with them, Mrs. Sorkvist could also be counted on to fill tables at church bake sales. “She baked coffee breads that people would come for from miles around,’’ said her son, John W. Sorkvist. “She’d bake 20 loaves of coffee bread in one day. When it came to baking and crafts, she had no peers.’’

She will be remembered for her kindness, as well, according to her family. “If anyone was in the hospital, or needed anything, she was always there,’’ her son said. “People can’t say enough good things about her.’’

In addition to her son, John, Mrs. Sorkvist is survived by a daughter, Joan L. Sorkvist; a sister, Eva Watson, and two grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Meislohn-Silvie Funeral Home, Port Richmond. Burial will follow in Ocean View Cemetery, Oakwood.
