- This James Duff was a clock and watchmaker in Edinburgh having been granted his freedom and right to be a burgess in right of his father (by patrimony), Alexander Duff, an armourer, also of Edinburgh, on 6 December 1758. Consequently, we can assume that this James was at least 25 years old in 1758.

Several apprenticeships were recorded whereby this James Duff was master, vizt:
28 Feb 1759, apprenticeship of William Kettle, son of John Kettle, a merchant in Leith, to James Duff, clock and watchmaker for 6 years;
18 Mar 1761, apprenticeship of John Cleland, son of James Cleland, a smith at Roxwell in Lasswade parish, to James Duff, clock and watchmaker, for 6 years;
1 May 1771, apprenticeship of William Paterson, son of James Paterson, journeyman mason, to James Duff, clock and watchmaker, for 7 years.
The Register of Testaments of Edinburgh probates indicated James Duff, clock and watchmaker in Edinburgh and recorded a grant on 3 Mar 1774.

The Testament dative and Inventory of the goods and gear which were pertaining and belonging to Umqll James Duff Clock nd Watchmaker in Edinburgh at the time of his decease who deceased thereupon the twelfth day of October last faithfully made and given up by Margaret Walker relict of the said defunct and only Executrix dative qua Creditrix decerned to turn in so far as upon the [blank] day of March cur. she the said MARGARET WALKER obtained sentence and decreed at her instance before the Commissioners of Edinburgh agr. Janet, Katharine, Margaret, David, Alexander and Elizabeth Duffs all lawfull children of the said defunct to the tutors and curators of such of said children as were minors if they any had for there interest taken the said Commissaries for the reasons and causes therein specified found and declared the sum of fourteen pound four shillings and five pence Sterling laid out and expended by the pursuer for and on account of the defuncts funerals and other priviledged claims therein particularly mentioned.
Item the sum of three pound three shillings Sterling for maintenance of the defuncts family for the time lybelledwith a fifth part more of each of the said sums nomine darnni and as the expence of process and decreet all to be just, true and lawfull debts addebted resting and owing by the said defunct to the pursr. and that she was his just and lawful Creditor therefore and had a preferable right and interest in the defuncts heretable and moveable estate and effects for payment thereof and might be decerned Exer Dative qua Creditrix to the defunct conjoined in the office of Exery with others the defuncts when and where the same should legally occur as the said decreet bears and therefore the said MARGARET WALKER is only Exerix Dative qua Creditrix decerned to the said defunct for payment and satisfaction to her of the sums of money contained in and due by the decreet before narrated after the form and tenor of the same in all points sicklike for payment to the said Executrix of the charges and expences of confirmation of this present testament Dative insofar as the Inventory foresaid of the said defunct his goods and gear after written will amount to and as may be recovered by the said Exer thereof allenarly and that be decreet of the Commissaries of Edinburgh as the same dated the second day of March MVII and seventy four years in itself at more length preports.

In the first there was pertaining and belonging to the said defunct at the time of his decease aforesaid the goods and gear after written of the avails aftermentioned viz. a four posted bed and bedding, three pound eight shillings
Item one desk bed and bedding, one pound three shillings.
Item a press bed and bedding, eighteen shillings and six pence.
Item an easy chair, nine shillings and six pence.
Item, six small chairs, twelve shillings.
Item, a looking glass, sixteen shillings.
Item, a smaller glass, two shillings.
Item, a desk, sixteen shillings.
Item, a table, six shillings and six pence.
Item, other two tables, six shillings.
Item, three grates, fifteen shillings.
Item, a kitchen dresser, two shillings and six pence.
Item a grate, four shillings and six pence.
Item, four stulk, two shillings.
Item a tea kettle, two shillings and six pence.
Item, stone and dilf ware, five shillings.
Item, a chest of drawers, one pound, one shilling.
Item, a carpet, ten shillings all Sterling money extending the values of the pariculars before written to eleven pound, five shillings Sterling which were so valued by Jane Brodie rouping woman in Edinburgh conform to her signed estimation of the same.
Item there was belonging to the defunct at the time of his decease aforesaid the following tools vizt, two large vices, seven shillings and six pence.
Item, two studies, two shillings and six pence.
Item, two pair of compasses, one shilling and six pence.
Item, two turner benches, three shillings.
Item, three hammers, nine pence.
Item, four arbors, six pence.
Item, a two hand vice and plyars, one shilling and six pence.
Item, a saw, one shilling.
Item, a sheving tub, one shilling.
Item, a grindstone, six pence.
Item, one oil stone, six pence.
Item, four ounces of files much wore, four shillings.
Item, a small time piece, one pound, one shillings, all Sterling money extending the values of the particulars before written to two pound, five shillings, and three pence Sterling and which were so valued by Will Downie, Clockmaker in Edinburgh and extending the values of the household furniture and tools before written in haill to fourteen pound, three shillings, and three pence Sterling which in Scots money is one hundred and sixty eight pound, three shillings.
Summa of the Inventory C pounds, Lxviii pounds, iii shillings
Masters James Smollet and M.C.O. and C. the said MARGARET WALKER only Exerex Dative qua Creditrix to the said defunct her husband and en to the goods and gear before written with full power to her if Caur Daniel Cargill, Cutler in Edinburgh dated the third March Mvii and seventy four years.
