- On Marriage entry of James Duff and Mary Lindsay, he is described as a gun maker.
James Duff on death certificate of Ann, his daughter, says he was a blacksmith.
James Duff was a gunmaker and a burgess of Edinburgh having obtained his freedom and rights in right of his father (by patrimony), Alexander Duff, a cutler, on 24 March 1815.
