Notes:
1. Notwithstanding that Thomas Poulsum, the Testator herein, specifies certain bequests to the children of his son, Thomas Poulsum, Jr., there appears this bequest to Alice Hawkesworth. The implication is that she was the daughter of Thomas Poulsum, Jr.. However, there is a marriage that took place at the Quaker Bristol meeting of Alice Poulsum to Peter Hawksworth on 1 October 1686. The marriage records states that Alice as the daughter of Thomas Poulsum of Melksham. Peter Hawksworth was of Bristol. Alice Poulsum, the daughter of Thomas Poulsum, Sr. would only have been 10 years old at the time of the marriage in 1686. The allowable age of marriage of a girl was 12 years. Accordingly, I have to conclude that the Alice Hawkesworth referred to in the Will really should have been a reference to a daughter of the Testator’s own daughter, also named Alice, rather than a reference to Alice Hawkesworth being the granddaughter and specifically the daughter of the Testator’s son, Thomas Poulsum, Jr..
2. The bequest here to Jeane [sic] Poulsum, daughter of the Thomas Poulsum, Jr. must be a reference to the child named Jane who is also mentioned in the will of Thomas Poulsum, Jr. in 1724 and again in the Will of Thomas Poulsum, whose Will was dated during 1763. The bequest in this Will to this individual in a specified relationship effectively ties together three Thomas Poulsums in a relatively close relationship to one another, vizt: Thomas Poulsum, the Testator herein; his named son, Thomas Poulsum, Jr.; and the Thomas Poulsum whose Will was dated during 1763. Adding into this line of descent is the administration that was granted to Thomas Poulsum, “son of the deceased, Thomas Poulsum” in 1759 and we can now piece together a descent of four generations of men named Thomas Poulsum, the earliest being the great-grandfather of the latest.
