Will of Sampson Grills of Mornick, Southill, Cornwall, England, dated 20 Feb 1636, d 1643 In the name of God Amen the 20th day of February Anno Domini 1636, I, SAMPSON GRILLS, the elder, of Mornicke in the parish of Southill in the County of Cornwall yeoman (being in perfect remembrance (I thank my God for it) do make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, First I give and bequeath my soul unto Jesus Christ my sole and whole Redeemer and my body to the earth whence it had this beginning. Item, I give towards the repairing [of] Southill Church 6s 8d. Item, I give to my son GEORGE [page torn] ...bord in the Hall and one other in the parlour [page town] ..est in the hall, one standing bedsted in the plantchinge over the hall, and trunk in the plantching over the parlour my eldest peare of wheeles, one with a dung butt resteth urrtying? and Two of my bigger pans which are mended with staples and also a quarter of my tinwork in Thornebeamme and a qua...[paper torn] quarter of my tinwork in Pengelly Crosse. In witness whereof I the before named SAMPSON GRILLS, the elder, revoking and disannulling all other Wills and Testaments that last by me made have to these presents set my sign and seal the day and year first above written These witnesses whose names are underwritten The sign of "S" William Olyver Sampson Grills Thomas C..ah? beforesaid *This is an archaic use of the word ‘nephew’ quite often found in the Wills of those who were unable to read or write and who were dictating their Wills to those who similarly lacked sufficient education to correctly use the term ‘niece’ when referring to the feminine version of the relationship. Clearly, Elizabeth would indicate that the individual was female as does the name Peternell used exclusively for females. See the name of Sampson’s own daughter, also Peternell.
