      Gilbert
Variants: Guilbert, Gilbart, Gilburt, Gillbard, Gilbard, Jelbert

      • Current frequencies: GB 23351, Ireland 662

      • GB frequency 1881: 16764

      • Main GB location 1881: widespread in England and Scotland

      • Main Irish location 1847–64: Wicklow and Dublin; Antrim; also Limerick

Norman, English: relationship name from the Old French personal name Gislebert, Gil(l)ebert (Guilbert ), Continental Germanic Gisilbert, Gislebert (composed of elements meaning ‘pledge or hostage’ + ‘bright’).

      Further information:
Reaney’s suggestion that Gilberd and Gilbard sometimes derived from the rare Middle English personal name Goldbert (Old English *Goldbeorht ), is unlikely, partly because of the unmotivated change in the vowel but also because there is no evidence that the name gave rise to a hereditary surname. See Goldbart.

      Early bearers:
      given names:

Gislebertus, 1086 in Domesday Book (Wilts); Gilbertus presbiter, about 1150 in Gilbertine Charters (Lincs); Gibertus le Vag’, 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Surrey).

surnames, England: Willelmus Gilberti, 1202 in Curia Regis Rolls (Wilts); Robert Gylebert, 1235 in Ancient Deeds v (Norfolk); Robert Gilberd, 1240 in Ramsey Cartulary (Cambs); William Gilbert, 1290 in Crowland Abbey Estates (Cambs); John Gilbard, 1304 in Feet of Fines (Suffolk); Margery Gilberdes, 1330 in Ancient Deeds vi (Wilts); Henry Gylbart, 1332 in Subsidy Rolls (Staffs); Otes Gylbert, 1459, probably identical with Ottes Ghilberd’, 1488 in Feet of Fines (Devon); John Jelbert, 1604 in IGI (Stock Gaylard, Dorset); Charles Jelbert, 1757 in IGI (Kenwyn, Cornwall).

surnames, Ireland: John Gilbert, gent., 1588 in Fiants Elizabeth §5170; Edmond Gilbert, 1600 in Fiants Elizabeth §6447.
