  • Notes
    • Charles Vaughan was born illegitimate to Sarah Vaughan in the Workhouse of St. George The Martyr, Southwark, Surrey, England. He had one brother, whose life, at this point, is unknown. Sometime after his arrival in Canada, Charles altered the spelling of his surname from Vaughan to Vaughn. Unfortunately, we do not know if this an intentional alteration or if simply that he was unaware of the correct spelling used by his grandparents and earlier forebears.

Information given by Charles Vaughn on the 1901 Census indicates that his birth date was January 12, 1875. This is now believed to be his Baptism date and that he did not know his true birthdate until his Mother came to Canada.

Charles Vaughn emigrated to Canada in 1889, possibly as an indentured farm worker. He reportedly was sent to work on a farm in the hamlet of McNab, in Grantham Township, Ontario, Canada. After conducting a thorough examination of the Register of Visitors who had attended Charles' funeral, and having matched those attendees with families and individuals in McNab during the late 1800s and early 1900s through an extensive search of local tax assessment records for the McNab area (1889-1901), it would appear that Charles had stayed with a family by the name of Wilson on Lots 5 and 6, Concession 1, Grantham Township. That property was subdivided between a father and his two sons: Thomas Wilson (wife Huldah) and his sons, Howard Alexander Wilson and Frank Bowman Wilson. Signing in the Register of Visitors were Howard A. Wilson with an Effie Wilson - which happens to be the name of Howard Wilson's wife - and a Frank B. Wilson.

Information from the 1891 and 1901 census returns confirm that the Wilsons had three children - Howard Alexander, Effie and Frank Bowman Wilson. All of these latter three individuals had signed the funeral guest register. Frank's brother, Howard Alexander Wilson, also married at McNab church on 14 November 1893 a Miss Mary Effie Read. The obituary of Howard Alexander Wilson, who died during 1955, indicated that he had at least one son named Elmer Read Wilson, as well as several grandchildren surviving him. Granddaughter Doris Wilson married Roland Allard and had two children: Lorraine and Patricia. Both of these girls are believed to still be living but attempts to locate any of the Allard have failed thus far.

Attempts to locate Donald and Phyllis McGeorge (nee Wilson and daughter of Elmer Read Wilson) have also failed. An obituary prepared for Ethel Gertrude Maud McGeorge, mother of Donald, named several grandchildren but unfortunately those grandchildren were not assigned to a specific set of parents. Donald also had a brother Clyde so it is still unknown if Donald and Phyllis had any children, directly.

Local Vernon's city directories and newspaper obituaries were also searched for any information that might lead to a living descendant of the Wilson family. It was discovered that Frank Bowman Wilson had died during 1959 leaving no issue. He had married 8 November 1899 Miss Effie Pay at McNab Christ Church.

Thomas Wilson had died during many years previous to the death of Charles. Howard Alexander Wilson, gleaned from obituaries in the St. Catharines Standard, died during 1955 and his brother, Frank Bowman Wilson, died during 1959. Frank left no children and current research is attempting to track down a living descendant of Howard Alexander Wilson.

Charles later worked at Dominion Rubber Works in Port Dalhousie, Ontario, Canada where he was able to save enough money to buy a small farm In the Township of Louth, Lincoln County. The address was Lot 3, Concession 1. He subsequently sold that farm on the 18th of August 1924 and purchased the farm on # 8 Highway Lots 1 and 2, Concession 5, Louth Township.

He eventually brought his Mother to Canada and she lived with him, until her death in 1924.

I remember as a child that, during the Second World War, Charles would arrive at our house with goods that were generally unattainable due to rationing. I don't think that the goods were obtained through legal channels but, nobody asked him from where they came.
      (Earl Chamberlain, grandson).
