TRIALS OF PRISONERS.
The first case was that of George Williams, 42, brickmaker (IMP), indicted for stealing a pair of slippers from Tristram Hill, at Lifton, on the 16th June. Mr. Beadon prosecuted; prisoner was undefended. The prosecutor missed his slippers from his house - an inn - where the prisoner had put up. The slippers were found in the prisoner's bundle. He now said he had not taken them intending to steal them, and urged as an excuse that he had been drinking for a fortnight. The jury found the prisoner guilty. He admitted a conviction for sheep stealing in 1865, and one or two terms of penal servitude. He was now sentenced to ten years' penal servitude.
