Land grants and Township Papers clearly indicate that Peter Caughill of Niagara Township, [at one time in Welland County, Ontario, Canada] circa 1796, obtained land in Gainsborough Township [at one time in Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada]. Those grants also confirm that this man was the son of George Cockle of Niagara, one of Butler's Rangers and the original Caughill settler in Upper Canada. The Gainsborough Township land was subsequently deeded by Peter Caughill, Sr. to his two sons, Peter Caughill, Jr. and William Caughill, both of Gainsborough Township, thereby establishing the ancestral connection between the Caughills of Niagara Township and the Caughills of Gainsborough Township.
