I ordered the death certificate of George Hodges (1843). I am not certain as of August, 2014 that this George Hodges is the correct individual. There is something decidedly missing - namely George with his wife, Sarah, in the 1841 census. This entire family may be the incorrect George Hodges altogether. So I am now revisiting George Hodges to look for other baptisms in the vicinity of Boxley (7-mile radius) that would fit more precisely.

All of the information below, aside from the 1841 Jeffery Street - Sarah and Emma Hodges, relates to the other George Hodges, the baker, at Maidstone.
George Hodges, aged 47 died due to consumption on 9 April 1843 at Stone Street, Maidstone. He was a baker by trade. Mary Tusler, of High Street, Maidstone, was present at the death.
So, by way of chronology we now have the following:
1797 George Hodges and Rosey Chantler marry at Maidstone
1818 George Hodges apprentices with Walter & Robert Hills as a baker
NOTE that in 1817 a James Hodges apprenticed with Jeremiah Aldridge as a hoyman
1819 George Edward Hodges (see burial in 1835) born to George and Ann Hodges, he baker
1822 George Hodges [the baker] witnesses the marriage of Mary Hodges to John Tussler
1822 Mary Ann is chr. d/o George/Ann, the baker
1825 George Hodges marries Sarah Hills at Boxley both described as being of that parish
1826 Emma Hodges is christened to George and Sarah on July 16, George described simply as a labourer at Maidstone
1841 Jeffery Street - Sarah Hodges, 40, grocer living with daughter Emma, 15,
1841 have not yet found any George Hodges on census
1847 Sarah Hodges in Directory, Jeffery Street, shopkeeper (she was a green grocer on census)[implies she is working and living without a husband = absent or widow?]
1850 Emma Hodges marries HMW Bodeker at Bearsted claiming she a resident and father, George, a farmer
1851 Sarah Hodges in Directory, Jeffery Street, beer retailer (she was a green grocer on census)[implies she is working and living without a husband = absent or widow?]
1827 in Directory, George Hodges, Union Street, baker
1827 in Directory, George Hodges, Union Street, coal dealer
1831 James s/o George/Ann, the baker is chr. at Maidstone
1832 George Hodges is included as a freeman with house and premises living on Week Street
1835 George Hodges appears on list of freeman having apprenticed 1818 at Maidstone [this is baker]
1835 George Edward Hodges is buried at Maidstone [30 Mar, chr 1819 , s/o George/Ann]
1841 Stone Street (D3, East Maidstone District, page 2), see below
1843 George Hodges [the baker] dies at Maidstone (9 April) residing on Stone Street present at death Mary Tussler
1851 John Hodges in Directory, Bower Place, beer retailer
1841 Census, Stone Street:
Robert Hills, 50, baker
Sarah Hills, 35
Joseph Hills 11
Charles Hills 8
Mary Ann HODGES, 15, female servant
Thomas Edwin HODGES, 15, baker
Samuel Bonner, 20 Baker
James Fuller Tranch, 25, baker
George Woollett, 15, manual servant
Interesting that there should be two Hodges children living with Robert Hills, the baker, on Stone Street. I am seriously considering that this is the Robert Hills, or a son of the man, with which George apprenticed. I bet George was either away on business or away at a TB hospital in 1841 but had been living at the baker's shop on Stone Street and that Mary Ann and Thomas Edwin Hodges are two more of George's [the baker] children.
Now comes another interesting bit: Mary Tusler the witness at George's death [the baker who died in 1843]. Ages ago, I had transcribed the Hodges marriage licences filed in the AD of Canterbury. Well, I dug those out when the death certificate came in and much to my surprise I had recorded the following marriage:
John Tusler of Maidstone, bachelor (bapt. at Lenham 12 June 1796 the son of Thomas and Jane Tusler) and Mary HODGES of the same place (born 15 December 1792, christened 16 January 1793 daughter of Edward and Mary Hodges), licence dated 8 October 1822. Affidavit by George Hodges and Edward Hodges, both of Maidstone.
Consequently, from this licence it would appear that Mary Tusler was likely the sister of George Hodges [the baker] and that, if Mary was the daughter of Edward and Mary Hodges so must George [the baker] be the son of Edward and Mary. George's age at death of 47 would put his birth circa 1796 and certainly in the running for the above possible relationships. Mary Tusler also appears as one of the witnesses on the marriage of Elizabeth Fulljames Hodges to William Christian. Hence, we have a tie between Mary Tusler, Elizabeth Fulljames Hodges and George Hodges [the baker], both through Mary's own marriage licence and via George's death certificate [the baker who died in 1843]. I have no doubt that the connections relating to George Hodges - parents and siblings - are correct. I am, however, uncertain of his being the father of our Sarah Hodges. Note the children and parents recorded, below.
I will have to go through the entire 1841 Maidstone census once again with a view to finding Mary Tusler as I certainly did not find her or her husband on the 1881 census index. I will also go through the 1851 Maidstone census with the same idea in mind and also to try and find who appear to be the two additional children of George - Mary Ann and Thomas Edwin. Thomas E. Hodges shows up on the 1881 census index as a journeyman baker a lodger living with William S. Mason and his sons on 65 Wheeler Street. Unfortunately. Mr. Mason is a widower but he is also a journeyman baker.
Thomas E. Hodges is 56 years born Maidstone, married with wife Elizabeth, a laundress aged 50 born London. No children are shown and I will attempt to find Thomas in 1891 as well.
So a few more pieces of the Hodges puzzle seem to have been added. After New Year's 2003 I will likely be ordering applicable portions of Maidstone registers. Unfortunately, the woman who checked for George and Sarah's marriage didn't go back far enough in time and now it appears that there may have been two earlier children. Oh well, it all contributes it's own flavour to the thrill of the chase.

Deaths:
These are all that are left after eliminating the too young to marry in 1825. Need to run same series for deaths in Sussex and Surrey. However, George Hodges may have died before civil registration, in which case I'd have to look at every parish register for a burial.
