      Be it Remembred [sic] the day and [year] above written that MARY RUCK of Westwell in [the] said County, Singlewoman came before us and [beginning line of script badly damaged] [...she was] about two months since [closing line of script badly damaged] [de-]livered of a male bastard child in the par[ish] of Westwell in the said County which is likely [closing line of script badly damaged] [to] become chargeable to the said parish and begotten on her Body by EDWARD RIGDEN of Leeds in the said County, Carpenter, who is an [may or may not be a word damaged or may simply be an end of line flourish] Apprentice to RICHARD RUCK of Leeds aforesaid, Carpenter, and further saith not.

      Know all Men by these presents that we EDWARD RIGDEN of Leeds in the County of Kent, Carpenter, John Rigden of Tunford [?] without [illegible] and MARGARET RIGDEN of Hinxhill, in the said County, spinster, are held and firmly bounden to WILLIAM SHARPE and JOHN BACK, Churchwarden and Overseer of the parish Church and poor of the parish Church of Westwell in the said County in forty pounds of good and lawfull money of Great Britain to be paid to the said WILLIAM SHARPE and JOHN BACK or their certain Attorney, successors or assigns to which payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves, both of us, for the whole and in gross our and either of our heirs, Executors and Administrators firmly by these presents sealed with our seals dated the eighteenth day of July in the twenty-third year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the Second over Great Britain and so forth and in the year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty Nine.

      The Condition of this Obligation is such that whereas MARY, the wife of ROBERT POPE in the parish of Westwell aforesaid, late MARY RUCK of Ashford, in the County abovewritten then a single woman was delivered of a male bastard child within the said parish of Westwell of which child the abovebounden EDWARD RIGDEN stands charged according to law to be the reputed father if therefore the said EDWARD RIGDEN, his Heirs, Executors, Administrators or Assigns or any of them do and shall from time to time and all at times hereafter fully and clearly acquit, discharge and save harmless as well the abovenamed WILLIAM SHARPE and JOHN BACK, Churchwarden and Overseer of the parish of Westwell aforesaid and their Successors for the time being and every of them as also the Inhabitants and parishioners of the said parish which now or hereafter shall be (for the time being) and every of them of and from all Costs, Charges, troubles and Incumbrances whatsoever for or by reason of the Maintenance, nourishing and bringing up the said Child from the Day of the Date hereof and of and from all other Suits, charges, troubles and demands whatsoever touching or concerning the same then this Obligation to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
